I was listening to WCBU on my way to work this morning and heard interviews with the two republican candidates for Peoria County Coroner, Johnna Ingersoll and George Blackburn. It's not a race that really fires up my political juices, but I did feel the need to call foul on Blackburn.
Admittedly, my knowledge of the coroner's office is pretty limited. However, it seems to me that someone who has been a deputy coroner and the coroner (Ingersoll) is more qualified for the job than someone who works for the Sheriff's office and owns a property management business (Blackburn).
But what really irked me this morning was Blackburn's statement that he was more qualified for the job because his schooling is in "the humanities, like psychology and sociology." What?? The Humanities are Classics, History, Languages, Literature, Law, Performing Arts (Music, Theater, Dance), Philosophy, Religion, and the Visual Arts. Psychology and Sociology are social sciences, not humanities.
You would think that, if he really had been educated in psychology and sociology, he might be aware of this fact. I'm pretty sure the first day of any psychology and sociology class covers the classification. And since one of my majors in college was psychology, I'm pretty sure of this fact.

My mom was the secretary for the coroner for fifteen years before she passed away. There are no legal requirements for the position but I think Ingersoll has done quite a bit for the county in her years of service.
Maybe the point of his qualifications should have been made in the last election that he lost to Ingersoll
Thanks for listening to WCBU, Ms. PH. The story you referenced is on the WCBU web site, and you can hear it at this link:

Ya know, just in case your readers want to hear it.
I'm concerned about the misinformation concerning Ingersoll's qualifications and job performance. She is not doing even an adequate job as coroner. Family members are waiting between 60-100 days now between the time of death and the inquest. And complaints are rampant about her rudeness and attitude. Beyond that she has stated that she graduated from Illinois Central College when in fact she did not. She said she graduated from high school when she really has a GED. Her training consists mostly of courses she has taken during her job... which is fine. But bottom line, she is not doing her job well. And she lied about her education. So...I don't think she deserves to be our Coroner.
FOUL???
The real foul here is Johnna Ingersoll's truthfulness and management of the Coroner’s office. Family members are waiting as much as 100 days between time of death and inquest. Her budget has increased yet the performance of the Corner’s office has not! Ingersoll claim’s she is a college graduate. The truth is Johnna Ingersoll has a GED!!!
As you were defining “Humanities” a definition of College Graduate might be in order.
